What Your Health Care Professional Is Missing

Whose shoulder do you cry on when you’re suffering from chronic shoulder pain? For years I have read sports articles referring to major league pitchers that have been diagnosed with all types of shoulder injuries. In one particular case, I read about a pitcher that had been diagnosed with a rotator cuff injury. When asked how they were going to handle his case, his medical team expressed that they had intentions of treating it “conservatively”. I don’t know about you, but in my opinion a cortisone shot only sounds conservative when you compare it to surgery.

I’d almost call it par for the course that these types of injuries are typically handled with shots, rest, stretching and strengthening of the shoulder, or oftentimes surgery. When I hear these prescriptions I can’t help but curiously wait to see if this treatment is going to cure the patient or if it will just be another case of nursing a repetitive injury. With today’s advancements in medicine I am surprised that the medical staffs for these athletes do not look beyond the area of injury. The fact that our bodies work in kinetic chains is no secret. Yet when injuries occur it is still unlikely that a health care professional will follow that chain to the true source of the condition.

If I were to work with that player my first step would have been to address the underlying muscle imbalances which caused the shoulder to function incorrectly.
